The revamping of Metal Industries Development Centre (MIDC) along with establishment of Institute of Surgical Technology (IST) has been completed at a cost of Rs 234.351 million and 334.384 million respectively and functioning successfully by Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) disclosed Project Director MIDC Khurram Shahzad.

In an interview with Business Recorder here Sunday he revealed that the basic concept behind the establishment of Institute of Surgical Technology was to produce trained and skilled workforce for catering the needs of the surgical industry while overhauling of MIDC was to provide modern common facility, advisory service and transfer of technology to the small businessmen engaged with the industry.

It may be added that MIDC was established during 1942-43 on the directive of British Crown in the recognition of skill and craftsmanship of local artisans and for the promotion of businessmen engaged with surgical industry. The MIDC has been equipped with latest machinery for catering the requirements of the industry and it has earned more than Rs 6.6 million by providing different service to the industry enabling it to complete at international market with quality products, he added.

He said that the major objective of MIDC in Sialkot was providing modern facilities, technology and adversary services to businessmen and manufacturers. The management and workers of MIDC played a pivotal role in the promotion of Surgical industry as a result of that surgical industry was recognised in the international market. By virtue of successful functioning of MIDC the local surgical industry is producing most modern surgical equipment and this centre offers valuable services to the industry, he told.

Khurram further added that after revamping presently MIDC Sialkot is offering common facility services in the fields of Vertical Machining Centre, CNC Wire Cut, Grinding, Laser Marking, Laser Welding, Argon and Spot Welding, Vacuum and Conveyer Belt Heat Treatment and Gas Fired tempering.

MIDC Sialkot also renders advisory services in the field of management, quality control, material testing and inspection, heat treatment, engineering design, Small and Medium Entrepreneurship, and career developing, as many as 259 trainees have passed out from MIDC and IST Sialkot after getting successful training in the field of Certificate in Computer Applications (CCA), CNC Machinist and Auto CAD (2D & 3D), while a new batch of 125 students is getting trained in the field of CNC Machinist and Auto CAD (2D & 3D).

The export of surgical instruments remained low against the quantity of about 150 million instruments per year. The industry is also manufacturing disposable instruments, which constitutes 60 percent of exports and reusable instruments that is 40 percent of the exports. The surgical industry represents manufacturers and exporters of surgical instruments, dental instruments, veterinary, pedicure and manicure items, tailor scissors, barber scissors and beauty saloon instruments.

There are about 2300 small and medium surgical units functioning in and close to Sialkot with labour force of 150,000 workers. The Pakistani surgical instruments are most economical in the world coupled with unconditional guarantee of finest quality and The surgical manufacturers and exporters were making strenuous efforts for further improving the standard and quality of the instruments to cope with the international market. There are 30 surgical units in this export-oriented city which are technically advanced with lot of mechanization in their production process and they had diversified into medical mechanized devices. The Institute of Surgical Technology is offering free courses to the students in the institute and after the completion of their courses they will play vital role in the promotion of local surgical industry.
